|
We oppose the C.R.A.C.K. program's approach to solving the problem of addiction among pregnant women. C.R.A.C.K. misinforms the public and does not address the problems it claims to solve. The program pursues a discriminatory strategy, targeting its outreach to low-income women of color. Rather than addressing the hardships faced by these women, C.R.A.C.K.'s misguided approach takes advantage of people?s immediate economic need. C.R.A.C.K. uses a cash incentive to entice women into accepting sterilization or long-term birth control. This tactic recalls recent US history where people who were considered defective or "undesirable" were sterilized without consent. C.R.A.C.K. is not truly about helping children. By spreading the "crack baby" myth, C.R.A.C.K. mislabels children as permanently damaged. Addiction treatment, comprehensive healthcare, childcare services, educational opportunities, and decent jobs are the real components of a caring community. Signed, | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
